Winder Power: Powering Excellence for Over a Century

Established in 1898, Winder Power Limited stands as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of Power and Distribution Transformers. With over 100 years of experience, Winder Power has established a reputation for innovation, customer service and technical excellence. This reputation has made them a trusted partner in sectors like utilities, renewable energy, and industrial applications.

Since 2003, Winder Power’s transformer systems have not only complied with but exceeded the stringent requirements of the Ecodesign Directive, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The company operates out of an 80,000 square-foot modern factory in Leeds, West Yorkshire. A team of over 100 skilled employees design, manufacture, and assemble all products to meet the highest international standards.

Their impressive portfolio includes transformer systems up to 60MVA and a rotating-machines division known as Newton Derby, a leading manufacturer of exciters and permanent magnet machines for the power generation industry. Winder Power has longstanding partnerships with key clients such as SSE plc, Scottish Power and GE Energy. This reflects their unwavering dedication to meeting industry needs both in the UK and internationally.

The Role of Elpress Systems in Winder Power’s Success

E-Tech Components has been a trusted partner of Elpress since its establishment in 2004. Elpress, a global leader in Cable Crimping Systems, has been at the forefront of the industry since 1959. They provide innovative solutions that prioritise safety, quality and reliability. Their products, such as the KRF® and KRFS Crimping Lugs and Connectors, offer unmatched electrical stability and durability. This makes them the ideal choice for demanding applications.

For Winder Power Limited, Elpress’ Complete Cable Crimping System ensures high-performance and secure connections in their transformers. Designed for crimping transformer system windings, CTC, and conductors, this leading solution was developed with top industry manufacturers. This fully IEC 61238-tested crimping system features comprehensive, checkable Quality Assurance (QA) procedures, ensuring consistent reliability and quality. By moving away from traditional brazing methods, it provides an environmentally friendly and safer alternative. With nearly 30 years of development, this system offers a range of solutions. These include Tee Connectors, Reducing Splices, Two-Hole Lugs, Angled Lugs and Tap Connectors. High-quality manufacturers like Winder Power rely on this robust QA system to maintain the best possible standards in their transformers.

Empowering Expertise: Elpress and E-Tech’s Training at Winder Power

Winder Power Limited is committed to maintaining the highest possible standards. They achieve this by providing all engineers, newly employed electricians and apprentices with annual certified training from Elpress. In September 2024, E-Tech Components, in collaboration with Elpress Academy, conducted specialised training for Winder Power’s team at their Leeds headquarters. Led by Liselotte Wagstrom, Account Manager at Elpress, the training focused on optimising the use of Elpress products to ensure secure and sustainable electrical connections.

This Elpress Academy technical training not only enhanced Winder Power’s in-house expertise. It also reinforced their commitment to Quality Assurance. By equipping their team with deeper knowledge of industry best practices and the latest crimping standards, Winder Power ensures that they continue delivering top-tier solutions to their clients. Certified Training like this serves as a quality document. It highlights the stringent processes in place to meet customer expectations.

Beyond the Elpress Academy, E-Tech Components offers a comprehensive range of services. These include Apprentice Courses, Certified Training and On-Site Crimping Inspections. These initiatives are designed to empower clients like Winder Power with the tools and knowledge they need to optimise their electrical systems and improve long-term project outcomes.

Speaking after the training, Winder Power Assistant Production Manager, Daniel Cornford said: “Winder and E-Tech have worked together for 20 years using the Elpress system and we really value our partnership. Their system has not only improved the quality of our finished product but has also improved the overall process, making it quicker and easier for our staff to understand.

“We have found their sliding crimp guide easy to use and understand time after time depending on the job. Once the crimp process has been done, we physically check each crimp is up to standard with their supplied die reference card. This makes the process quick and easy, but more importantly makes it near impossible to let a bad crimp go through the quality check.”

System Elpress: Ensuring Integrity Through a Holistic Approach

In conclusion, the integrity of a Cable Crimping System hinges on the seamless integration of all its components: Conductor, Terminals/Lugs, Tested Tools, Documents, Trained Personnel and Service Maintenance Calibration. Remember, a Crimping System is only as strong as its weakest link. Omitting any element can lead to non-compliance, jeopardising safety and performance.

At E-Tech Components, we understand that a holistic approach is essential. By ensuring every puzzle piece works in harmony, this not only guarantees compliance but also delivers secure, long-lasting connections. Choosing System Elpress means committing to a comprehensive solution that prioritises quality, safety and efficiency in every installation.

Through their collaboration with Elpress and E-Tech Components, Winder Power continues to lead the way in the Power and Distribution Transformer Systems, delivering products that meet the highest standards of efficiency, sustainability and reliability.
